apply for a situation申请一个职位。作职业讲时，situation和career可换用，但career不作职位讲。

>> The U.S.A. has assimilated immigrants from most of the countries of Europe.
immigrant从外国移入的“移民”，“侨民”，如：European immigrants in Australia 在澳大利亚的欧洲移民。emigrant迁移到外国去的“移民”，“侨民”，如：Japanese emigrants fro Brazil 移居巴西的日本侨民。migrant候鸟，移栖的动物，也指从一个地方到另一地方去的移居者。
-> assimilate v. to completely understand and begin to use new ideas, information etc; =absorb.
>> It will take time to assimilate all these facts.

>> I walked too much yesterday my leg muscles are still aching now.
当一个名词没有同根形容词时，就常用作定语，如句中的leg muscles，又如：orange juice，trade delegation，cough mixture，college students等。不能说my leg's muscles，因为名词所有格主要用于表示有生命的名词。若要用介词短语来表示“腿部肌肉”，习惯上用in而不用of，且常与物主代词连用，如：Larry develops the muscels in his legs by running.

1. a group of people who represent a company, organization etc.
2. the process of giving power or work to someone else so that they are responsible for part of what you normally do.
-> delegate v. delegate sth to sb >> Minor tasks should be delegated to your assistant.
delegate sb to do sth >> I was delegated to find a suitable conference venue.
-> venue n. a place where an organized meeting, concert etc takes place. >> The band will play as many venues as possible.

>> The data received from the two spacecraft whirling around Mars indicate that there is much evidence that huge thunderstorms are occurring about the equator of the planet.
有些名词的单、复数形式是相同的，如spacecraft，aircraft，hovercraft。
->hovercraftn. a vehicle that travels just above the surface of land or water, travelling on a strong current of air that the engines produce beneath it.
气垫船是一种以空气在船只底部衬垫承托的交通工具。气垫通常是由持续不断供应的低压气体形成。气垫船除了在水上行走外，还可以在某些比较平滑的陆上地形行驶。气垫船是高速行驶船只的一种，行走时因为船身升离水面，船体水阻得到减少，以致行驶速度比用同样工率的船只快。很多气垫船的速度都可以超过五十节。

->hydrofoiln. a large boat with wing-shaped parts on the bottom that lift it above the surface of the water when it travels fast.
水翼船是一种高速船。船身底部有支架，装上水翼。当船的速度逐渐增加，水翼提供的浮力会把船身抬离水面（称为水翼飞航或水翼航行)，从而大为减少水的阻力和增加航行速度。

wage是指短期（按周或日）付给劳动者的工资或工钱，也可指不定期的临时工资，多用复数。salary是按年或月付给白领阶层（脑力劳动者）的月薪或年薪。income是收入，所得。
如：a laundress's daily wage 洗衣女工的日工资，a teacher's salary 教师的薪金，family income 家庭收入。

>> Card-playing is the most common family game.
game是指室内或室外的、脑力或体力的，并有一定规则的游戏，比赛，如：have a game of bridge/chess 打一会桥牌（下一盘象棋），the Fourth Olympic Winter Games 第4届冬季奥运会。contest通常用于非体力竞技的，没有固定规则，常由一群评委来评定的竞赛，比赛，如a beauty contest 选美比赛，an oratorical contest 讲演比赛。match多指重要的公开比赛，多用于两人之间的比赛，如have(hold) a match 举行比赛。
以上区别是相对的，应从活的语言中积累词汇用法知识。

go/come into effect开始生效，开始实行。
